dibujos de geoff

Doing work for the Jubilee all this week. I was quickly commissioned for a banner for a dude who’s going to have a booth making pork sandwiches. He wanted a totally psychedelic version of one of those shoddy Mexican carneceria signs where the animal is happy as a clam about how tasty they happen to be and are either serving or eating a piece of themselves.
I keep working in illustrator for these things because folks don’t know the dimensions and it’s easier to be on the fly in vector. It’s been years but I’m FINALLY getting to the point where it can be fun.
On the other hand I’m also preparing prints for pen and ink work. And doing more pen and ink work.

I also did a bit of design work for a website Askitup. It’s a real neat build onto twitter whereby you can ask someone’s twitter a question. They answer in a reply and the site stores the questions and answers so you can have a personal FAQ. Gooood times. These are also the guys that came up with Catstrobe in their spare time.

The work included layout, an avatar, and a logo. I designed the question mark logo by hand and then wrangled it in illustrator. The pen tool is real funny because you have a general shape that you draw out and when you start to work it out a la pen tool it ends up changing shape because you have to wrangle the curves to make it look smooth.

Illustrator is still not my favorite thing but I’m getting there. Thank God a flat matte vector logo can look just as good as a rendered 3d one. Still a lot of wrangling but not nearly as much, although I’m going to be doing it for an upcoming job.

I have a good friend of mine who gets the greatest kick out of video file conversion management and generally keeping his computer tidy as a traditional Japanese tea house.
I bring that up because I did this logo for a friend’s band (https://www.facebook.com/AnimalRaps) and I did all the work on my Cintiq tablet. A little later I pulled the file back up on my laptop and the colors were a little bit lighter! Somehow my laptop monitor got off kilter. So I broke down and finally invested in a monitor calibrator.
Vector images are something I’m comfortable with but only through forced familiarity. Guy wanted a logo and although it would’ve been WAY easier to do it by hand it seemed like a good opportunity to exercise the Illustrator muscles.
